SCM Microsystems Receives Market Leadership Award in North America for Significant Contributions to U.S. Government Programs and Broader Smart Card Reader Market

SCM received the coveted 2009 Frost & Sullivan North American Smart Card Readers Market Leadership Award from global growth consulting firm Frost & Sullivan.

In making the selection, Frost & Sullivan’s analysts emphasized SCM’s market success over many years, with more than two million card readers distributed to U.S. federal government smart card programs, enabling both secure PC log-in for military personnel under the Common Access Card (CAC) program of the Department of Defense and both logical and physical access for the inter-agency Personal Identity Verification (PIV) program that covers all federal workers. Other factors of note were SCM’s broad range of advanced smart card reader solutions and its recently completed strategic merger with Hirsch Electronics.

The award is given to the company that has exhibited market share leadership through the implementation of market strategy. The recipient has displayed excellence in all areas of the market leadership process, including the identification of market challenges, drivers and restraints, as well as strategy development and methods of addressing these market dynamics. Furthermore, the recipient has continually demonstrated solutions for monitoring market changes and for implementing superior market strategies. SCM Microsystems’ Contactless Readers among Top Performers at global Interoperability Test in Berlin

The radio frequency readers of SCM Microsystems were among the most successful reader entries in the international e-Passport testing, taking place from May 29th to June 1st in Berlin. During the test electronic passport samples were tested against readers from multiple manufacturers for interoperability. SCM’s reader successfully read 89 out of 90 electronic passports – a success rate of almost 99 percent. Among the ten most successful manufacturers of e-Passport readers at the test were also several whose readers included SCM radio frequency technology. With that, the company was one of the top performers out of 47 reader vendors at the event.

Interoperability test in Singapore

On 7 and 8 November 2005, the latest in a series of Interoperability tests was conducted in Singapore to define and develop interoperability standards for ePassports and corresponding readers. The tests serve as a venue for industry and governments to perform a “many to many” cross testing of passport and reader products. Participants can experience first-hand any issues of compatibility or interoperability and have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to improve their products. It was the forth such test since the first interoperability trials took place in 2004 in the United States and Australia.

250 delegates participated in the recent session, representing 85 industry and government organisations and 28 countries and testing 40 passport readers and 140 passport samples. 56 % of the readers included ISO/IEC 14443 type A chips and 44% type B chips.

SCM Microsystems’ ePassport reader modules were integrated in about 40 percent of all ePassport scanners as the company has delivered its customized modules and readers to key industry organisations and several governments that integrate the modules into their designs and readers. The e-modules demonstrated to excellent test results overall, an upshot already proven in previous trials.

Huge improvements were made in the performance of e-Passports and readers overall. For example, the speed of secured reading (Basic Access Control) improved to two to four seconds, depending on data size, which is significantly better than in past test sessions. Likewise, significantly more passport samples and readers met current standards than in previous trials. Data show that the cross reading of ISO/IEC-A samples had a success rate of about 94% and type B samples of about 84% at a 0 cm distance.
